Grafted Honey Locust — Millwood (spring delivery)

$70.00

Honey locust is in all likelihood the best species for ruminant silvopasture. They have a dappled canopy that lets a lot of light to forages beneath, and their pods drop from October through February and last for months on the ground. That’s exactly what is needed in a rotational grazing system, allowing one to stockpile several tons of high-energy pods to the acre. The one problem is their thorns, which can be long and vicious. These grafted trees will not have thorns, though in some cases the tree they were originally selected from may have had thorns, which means their progeny are more likely to have thorns as well, though folks with long-standing honey locust orchards in Virginia and Mississippi have told us that they do not have issues with seedlings becoming a nuisance. Honey locusts can produce pods without being fertilized by another individual.

Millwood: The most well-known of the honey locust cultivars for pods. Yields a high-sugar pod, though not quite as high as Calhoun. Does seem to yield significantly higher volumes than Calhoun. Probably the best bet for high yields anywhere in USDA zone 6 and warmer.

Below is a description of the original tree: “The original Millwood was a 6-inch tree located near Lake Junuluska, North Carolina, and bore pods with a sugar content of 31 percent (dry weight basis). The parent tree was entirely thornless when first examined but later produced a few thorns on a trunk sprout and a partly thorny root-sucker.”

Height: 1-3′

Volume discounts: 4-9 trees for $48, 10-24 trees for $35. 25-99 trees for $30, 100+ trees for $24

Shipping: This product will ship out in March or early April as a bare root tree depending on your region.  If you want to plant earlier and your ground is not yet frozen by early December, consider a fall shipment. Any trees over 6’ will be headed back to  just under 6′ for shipping since shipping boxes longer than 6’ becomes much more expensive. Trees picked up will not be topped but remain at full height.

*Restricted and not available for shipment to Arizona or California.

Local pickup: March 13, 2026 from 9am-5pm at TFG shop on 2363 Stumptown Rd, Lancaster, PA 17602
