Join the Chesapeake Bay Commission, Trees for Graziers, and local farmers for a walk exploring silvopasture. Silvopasture is the intentional integration of trees and grazing livestock on the same land. This practice can provide a number of benefits, including shade for the livestock, alternative food sources when grasses aren’t growing, and improved water quality. Explore these benefits firsthand and hear from local farmers on one of two upcoming silvopasture walks.
During these events, farmers Samuel Esh and Nelson Martin will lead a tour of their silvopasture projects and discuss which trees they chose, how the trees were planted, how to protect trees in a silvopasture, management challenges and successes, and how their silvopastures will evolve over time. Our silvopasture partners from Trees for Graziers will also share their knowledge and experiences for implementing and managing new silvopastures. Information will be provided on current funding opportunities in Pennsylvania for farmers and agriculture producers who want to adopt these conservation practices on their own farms. We hope to see you there! Please register at least two days in advance of the event you plan to attend (so we can be sure to have enough ice cream!).
