Chinese Chestnut (fall delivery)
$15.00
A multi-functional silvopasture species that yields reliably and offers a high carbohydrate feed during the fall. Should be included in any planting for pigs and turkeys. A great option in some cattle systems as well. The challenge is that it will start deteriorating within several weeks of dropping, which makes it more challenging to use in a rotational grazing context. Also, the high starch content is similar to corn, and is more likely to cause issues if someone is certified grassfed than the sugars found in honey locust or persimmons, though that’s not a concern for everyone. If planting in a continuous grazing or low-rotation context, this can be a fantastic and reliable option providing valuable fall energy from a tree that bears reliably from all seedlings, and there’s no concerns of thorns as in honey locust, though I wouldn’t plant them in my yard on account of the burrs.
