SilvoPro NC: Understanding Systems to Launch Silvo in NC

Do you want to see silvopasture take off in North Carolina? This workshop will lay out how to make that happen. Building on the successes and learnings of the team at Trees For Graziers, who have established silvopasture plantings on over 25 farms in just 3 years in a small pocket of Pennsylvania, a state that previously saw maybe one planting per year, we will lay out what needs to happen in NC for silvopasture to take off. Specifically, we will assess the reasons for silvopasture, the reasons it has not been adopted widely, and what resources need to be available to farmers. We’ll also highlight the different services, including technical and funding assistance, silvo-specific nursery stock and planting/aftercare contractors that are key to silvopasture success.

You will walk away from the workshop with a thorough understanding of what resources farmers need to get started with silvopasture, and where to find those resources.

• This workshop is geared towards people working professionally with silvopasture. It is the first of three workshops being offered at Warren Wilson College on October 27-28. More information about the Professional Planning workshop that’s scheduled for the afternoon of October 27 can be found here, and registration for the Intro to Silvopasture workshop (Oct 28 all day) can be found here. Workshops can be done separately, but are best when taken together.
• Given the limited time, there will be very little intro to silvopasture. We highly recommend that people come primed with information about the basics of silvopasture, so they can have an informed discussion. The Grazier’s Guide to Trees gives a thorough overview, and this webinar from our friends at Working Trees also gives a great primer on silvopasture
